To remove a background in Adobe Express, select the photo inside a design, choose Remove Background, then export with a transparent page background. Removing the background of the photo and removing the fill behind the whole design are separate steps; missing the second is a common reason a download still looks white.
Use Express if you also need a finished layout. For a product cutout or studio background, ShotBG offers a more focused workflow. Neither route guarantees clean edges on every source photo.
Remove the background inside an Express design
These instructions follow Adobe's English-language web editor documentation, rather than a claimed hands-on comparison.
- Open your design in Adobe Express and add your product photo.
- Select the image itself on the canvas. Selecting the page or a text box will show different controls.
- In the left Image panel, choose Remove Background.
- Inspect the result, especially pale edges, straps and spaces inside handles. Adobe warns that fine or low-contrast details can be removed with the background.
- Click outside the canvas. In the left panel, choose Background, then No fill.
- Select Download and choose Transparent PNG. A JPEG cannot retain the transparent area.
The control names and page-fill step are documented in Adobe's Express background-removal instructions. If your account shows an access prompt, check that prompt before proceeding; this guide does not assume a particular subscription includes every export option.
Why some links now open Firefly
Adobe's public background-remover landing page, despite its Express URL, currently presents a Firefly workflow. That is a different entry point from an open Express design. To follow the steps above, work inside Express; do not look for Express's page-background panel in Firefly.
This distinction also makes old price and free-tier comparison tables unreliable. Evaluate the actual action and download available in your account, rather than assuming that every Adobe background-removal screen has the same entitlement.

Check the downloaded file, not just the preview
Open the saved PNG in an editor and place a colored layer beneath it. A viewer's white canvas is not proof of a white background: the color underneath should show through genuinely transparent pixels. A checkerboard that remains visible over the new color is part of the image, not transparency.
Inspect the cutout on both light and dark backgrounds. Look for a white fringe around a dark bottle, missing holes between bag handles, and parts of clear packaging that still contain the old scene. The transparent-image guide explains why PNG format alone does not establish transparency.
For a missing product edge, return to the original photograph. Painting white onto a mask can restore hidden original pixels, but cannot recreate pixels that were already discarded from an exported cutout.
Manual refinement or ShotBG: choose the remaining task
If the silhouette needs precise repairs, a layered editor gives you a mask you can revise. Keep the original aligned below the edited layer and use the GIMP masking tutorial for a manual approach. Glass, hair and translucent fabric may need more than a simple opaque outline.
