  3. Zoom in on the edges and check hair, straps, corners, and any gaps between the subject and its handles or legs.

What gives the cleanest edges

  • Contrast: a subject that differs in color or brightness from its backdrop separates more cleanly than one that blends into it, such as a white mug on a white table.
  • Sharpness: a blurred edge has no clear line to follow, so shoot or pick the sharpest frame you have.
  • See-through materials: glass, thin plastic, and fine mesh show the background through them, so the result can keep or lose part of that tint. Check these first.
  • Enough resolution: very small images leave little edge detail to work with, so start from the largest original you have.

What is the difference between cutting out a background and clearing it?
Both start from the same step: the subject is separated from its background. "Cut out" usually means you want the subject on its own to reuse somewhere else. "Clear" usually means you want the area behind it empty, which in an image file means transparent pixels. In ShotBG both end in the same result: a transparent PNG, which you can then keep transparent or place on white or another background in an external editor.
Why is my cutout PNG showing a white or checkered background?
A transparent PNG has no background color at all. Some viewers draw transparency as white, black, or a grey-and-white checkerboard so you can see it. If a file really shows a baked-in white box, it was saved as JPG or flattened onto white. Re-export as PNG and open it in an editor or on a colored page to confirm the transparency is real.
Does cutting out the background also remove the shadow?
A shadow cast on the surface behind the product is part of the background, so it normally goes with it, and the cutout can look like it is floating. If you need grounding, place the cutout on a background and add a soft shadow afterwards instead of trying to keep the original one.
Does it work on people and pets, or only products?
It works on any subject in a still photo, including people and pets. The same edge-detection model isolates the subject from the background, and complex edges like flyaway hair or fur come out best on a reasonably clear original. The output is a transparent PNG you can place on any background.
